Amplif[ie]d | JMSN

By: Marissa Scheerer

As it turns out, the man behind the R&B, electronica jams of JMSN is as intriguing as the music he makes. Smooth vocals and soulful beats reel the listener into the daily inspirations of JMSN’s singer-songwriter, Christian Berishaj. According to him, “It’s all about the trials and tribulations of life.” In a recent interview with IEShineOn.com, he explained how his perception is different,  “Things that may seem small or minute to other people can be a huge thing to me.”

Post an Olive-Garden pit stop, we managed to catch a moment with Christian, amidst his five-week tour across North America. His simple humanity intersected with his creative take on the world around him, with every answer.

Where’d the name JMSN come from?

JMSN: The Whiskey. I like it.

And, the spelling?

I didn’t want to get into any legal trouble with Jameson. You know. [Ha, could have figured].

How did you get into music?

Well, I started playing piano at a young age. But I thought guitar was cooler so, I picked that up and just—started making music.

Where are you from?

East Point, Detroit.

Who are some of your biggest influences?

The Bee Jees. R. Kelly, Prince.

How would you describe your sound?

Hmm. Honestly, I’d have to say—it’s me. I take everything intensely and seriously. I am inspired by life—all of it. Different things come from different influences and experiences.

What’s one of the more memorable and inspiring performances you’ve seen lately?

Sigur Ros at the Hollywood Cemetery.

What are some of your favorite memories or performances on tour?

It’s all made by the people who come to the show. Every time I see people showing up, it’s awesome.

Christian lit up most as he talked about his audience, “When the crowd does their job well, I do my job well,” said Christian. “The crowd really turns it up a notch when they pull something out of you [that] you didn’t know existed.” His appreciation for the crowd and connection to the people at his shows reflects the humility and self-awareness so present in his creative persona.
