Many political, social and spiritual groups would encourage being altruistic and giving back to your community year-round. However, something is in the air during the holiday season that really brings out the spirit of giving in all of us. For 12 days throughout December, we want to inspire you to give back to those who are in need in our local neighborhoods. Our "12 Days of Giving" feature will share the impact and needs of twelve different Inland Empire charities.  Our hope is that each feature will inform you and encourage you to donate, volunteer or give back in some way. Please consider giving the gift of kindness to a stranger this season, because it may be the only one they receive.

Day Two — Foothill Family Shelter in Upland

Foothill Family Shelter
With the holidays upon us, many of us are lucky enough to look around at the many comforts and conveniences we are grateful for. Sadly, many families go without such luxuries year-round, and there’s something about the holidays that brings out the altruist in all of us. The Family Foothill Shelter in Upland provides local homeless and low-income families with some of the most basic comforts of home seven days a week, 365 days a year.

During the holiday season, Family Foothill Shelter accepts donations of specifically non-perishable food, diapers and wipes, hygiene products, new clothing, new toys and gift cards through Jan. 6, 2015. It is also not too late to organize a local food or holiday gift drive with your friends, family, neighbors and community in order to provide these families with the basic necessities and a little holiday cheer.

If you’d like to make a kind gesture that is a little bit more on the personal side, go ahead and Grant a Wish for Christmas. There are various Christmas wishes from both children and adult clients, and each wish costs less than $25. Wish-gifts need to be unwrapped and delivered to the office by Dec. 10th. Call the shelter directly at (909) 920-0453 if you would like to grant a holiday wish for a client. Gift cards are always welcomed by clients whose wishes are not granted, as well as donations of wrapping paper and Christmas trees with stands. Visit their website or Facebook for more information.

Remember that sharing is caring, and if you can’t personally give back, share it with someone who can! #ieshineon #12daysofgiving
