Community | The 12 Days of Giving - Day One

By: Ashley Solis

Many political, social and spiritual groups would encourage being altruistic and giving back to your community year-round. However, something is in the air during the holiday season that really brings out the spirit of giving in all of us. For 12 days throughout December, we want to inspire you to give back to those who are in need in our local neighborhoods. Our "12 Days of Giving" feature will share the impact and needs of twelve different Inland Empire charities.  Our hope is that each feature will inform you and encourage you to donate, volunteer or give back in some way. Please consider giving the gift of kindness to a stranger this season, because it may be the only one they receive.

It is because of organizations like Santa Claus, Inc. that children and families get to have the Christmas they’ve always dreamed about. Santa Claus, Inc.’s goal is to truly make sure the parents of over 20,000 underprivileged children get a Christmas shopping experience, rather than receiving a donation from a charity. They do so by allowing parents the opportunity to shop through the new toys, books and clothing that have been donated and bought for the organization.

Each year, hundreds of volunteers provide assistance to over 8,000 parents, grandparents or guardians. Their service area is within Colton, Highland, Redlands, San Bernardino and Rialto Schools Districts. Families also receive assistance through San Bernardino County Social Services. Most children within these districts who qualify will receive an application through their schools. If you know of a family that could benefit from these services you may nominate them online or by calling (909) 885-0090.

If you’re interested in becoming one of “Santa’s Elves” and assist with shopping, organizing and working in the group’s numerous departments, visit their website. Cash and new item donations can be made online or in person. Also, Santa Claus, Inc. holds numerous events during the holiday season including the following, which are coming up soon:

  • The Glory of Christmas Traditions Evening Gala on Fri, Dec. 5 at 6:00p.m. including a cocktail reception, tree preview and dinner extravaganza.
  • The Glory of Christmas Traditions Luncheon and Fashion Show on Sat, Dec. 6 at 10:00a.m., including a tree preview, shopping and luncheon.
  • Open House at Santa Claus Workshop on Mon, Dec. 8 from 4:00p.m. to 7:00p.m.
  • Holiday Distribution to Parents: Tues, Dec. 9 through Tues, Dec. 16.

Remember that sharing is caring, and if you can’t personally give back, share it with someone who can! #ieshineon #12daysofgiving
