Many political, social and spiritual groups encourage altruism and giving back to your community year-round. However, something is in the air during the holiday season that really brings out the spirit of giving in all of us. For 12 days throughout December, we want to inspire you to give back to those who are in need in our local neighborhoods. Our "12 Days of Giving" feature will share the impact and needs of 12 different Inland Empire charities. Our hope is that each feature will inform you and encourage you to donate, volunteer or give back in some way. Please consider giving the gift of kindness to a stranger this season, because it may be the only one they receive.

Day 11 – Jurupa Valley Adopt a Family

Back in 1993, a small group of firefighters from Pedley decided to help give families in need a brighter holiday season. They were providing food and toys during the holidays, and within a few years, firefighters from West Riverside, Glen Avon, Rubidoux and Mira Loma joined forces and brought this holiday support to families throughout the greater Jurupa Valley area. By 2009 the organization’s holiday “adoption” program was providing food, household goods and healthcare supplies to over 100 families and bringing toys to over 7,500 children through a partnership with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department’s Spark of Love program. Families who are selected for full “adoption” during the holidays each receive two full weeks of food and household supplies in addition to Christmas gifts for the children. A few of the families even get the Christmas presents delivered by Santa and an escort of fire engines.

While their efforts brought Christmas cheer to the families during the holiday season, it didn’t help fix the root problem—poverty. So in 2015 the organization’s mission became to end the cycle of poverty and help youths prepare to enter the workforce. Now known as the Jurupa Valley Adopt a Family program, the organization continues to provide support during the holidays through its Santa Express and Adopt a Family programs, but they also added the newly commissioned Opportunity Development Program, which aims to help youths be better prepared for adulthood and put an end to poverty.
