Happy Hour at Nuno's Bistro and Bar

I was all-too-happy to have the opportunity to review one of my favorite restaurants and excited to see its brand new happy hour menu. Located in a seemingly random strip mall on Arrow Route, I first came across Nuno’s Bistro and Bar, in Upland, while on my way to the Claremont Village. Since that fateful day, my husband and I have eaten dinner there multiple times and have recently become addicted to their brunch selections and cocktails (I would highly recommend their Bloody Mary). Now we will have a new addiction – their amazing happy hour drink deals.

The service Nuno’s provides along with the restaurant’s casual, but classy ambiance, sets the stage for a truly great dining experience. It’s the perfect place for an intimate date night or to meet up with a group of friends or family. Order their tapas plates and pass them around the table family style to get a varied taste of what the restaurant has to offer, or get a pizza made in their huge built-in wood stone oven. You won’t be disappointed. I’ve never eaten anything there I didn’t like.

Nuno’s new happy hour runs every day (except Mondays when the restaurant is closed) from 3 to 6 p.m. at the bar. Small tapas plates include patatas bravas (fried wedges of crispy potatoes tossed with a spicy sauce), porquinhos (bacon wrapped dates stuffed with linguica sausage and topped with a sweet and spicy sauce), caprese (skewered fresh cubes of mozzarella cheese, ripe cherry tomatoes, and basil leaves drizzled with a rich balsamic reduction), and piri piri wings (wings marinated in the restaurant’s signature piri piri sauce and roasted to spicy perfection – and I do mean spicy). I could personally eat their porquinhos daily and I’m not quite sure what the secret is to their amazing piri piri sauce, but I always get a side of it with any savory food order because it’s just that good.

Now for the drinks. I’ve always loved their cocktails and was worried the new drinks offered on the happy hour menu wouldn't live up to my high expectations, but my fears were unfounded because every drink I tried was wonderful. My favorite had to be the La Conquista featuring a complex yet perfectly balanced combination of Mescal, Ancho Reyes liqueur, simple syrup, ginger, and lime juice.

Not a fan of Mescal? Not a problem. The happy hour menu offers a variety of liquors in its drinks, including brandy, vodka, vermouth and rum. Drinks run from sweet or tangy to savory. And the prices are great, especially considering that you’re getting a fresh hand-mixed cocktail rather than a pre-mixed drink, each with a decent pour of liquor. At only $6 for a signature cocktail or well drink, it’s almost a steal.

I have to mention one of their desserts (even though it doesn’t appear on the happy hour menu), simply because it might be one of the best desserts I have ever eaten. The Queijo Da Serra will be my new go-to dessert for times I’m craving something sweet. This Portuguese custard has an amazing velvety texture that prompted me to whisper “oh my goodness” under my breath. Apparently it’s a common response, because when my husband wanted to go to Nuno’s later in the week to meet up with friends and family, they, too, were amazed at how good it was.

If you make your way to Nuno's, make sure you ask for Ramon, at the bar. Many claim he's one of the best bartenders EVER. We don't disagree ;)

 

I had heard of mixologist Ramon at @nunosbistro as "the best in the WORLD." I had to see for myself. AND...I must say, Romero is a bonafide bad ass behind the bar with countless tricks up his sleeve.
