Inland Empire Oktoberfest Guide

The Traditional September Celebration: Oktoberfest

The world’s largest and most famous annual beer festival kicks off this week in Munich, Germany. The 183rd Oktoberfest runs from Sept. 17-Oct. 3 and is expected to draw more than 6 million people over 16 days.

Originating in 1810, today’s Oktoberfest draws similarities to our local county fairs, with carnival rides, parades, food booths, contests, agriculture and entertainment – to go along with 14 separate beer tents. Beer in Germany is akin to a religion, and only beers brewed in Munich and conforming to the Renheitsgebot – or German Beer Purity Order – are allowed to be served at Oktoberfest.

While the original event remains the model for celebrations worldwide, Oktoberfest is quite a bit different in the United States. Aside from not holding to strict brewing standards, most of our events actually start in October. Some continue for several weeks, while others are smaller one- or two-day festivals. Most stick to some basic combination of Bavarian biers, food and oom-pah music. Here is a sampling of what’s happening around the Inland Empire and beyond. Drink responsibly, and be sure to tag us at #iegoodtimes.
