Basketball Legend Bill Walton to Speak at Riverside Athletic Leadership Clinic
NBA Hall of Fame legend Bill Walton will give the keynote address at Riverside’s third annual Athletic Leadership Clinic on Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Riverside Convention Center.
Just like Walton’s presentation, the leadership-building clinic will be fast-paced and informative. Walton, who was voted as one of the 50 Greatest NBA Players of All Time, will be joined by a star-studded panel of speakers to address the key elements of building strong character and team building through athletics.
Considered one of the greatest college basketball players ever, the former three-time NCAA Player of the Year at UCLA led John Wooden’s prodigious UCLA teams of the early 1970s to unprecedented winning streaks and a pair of national titles.
Despite a series of injuries, the big redhead also enjoyed a storied professional career, beginning as the NBA’s first overall draft pick by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1974 draft. He led the Blazers to the NBA championship title in 1976-77, and a year later he was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. He later signed with the San Diego/Los Angeles Clippers and the Boston Celtics, playing a key role and winning the NBA’s Sixth Man Award during Boston’s 1985-86 NBA title year.
Today Walton is also widely known for his success as a television analyst and broadcaster. His son Luke Walton is the new head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.
Hosted by Riverside Unified School District in partnership with the Riverside Sports Commission and the Press-Enterprise, the Athletic Leadership Clinic will also feature speakers Stan Morrison, former UCR athletic director and USC head basketball coach; Rob Wigod, commissioner of the CIF Southern Section; Micah Parker, California Baptist University’s director of athletics; Michele Himmelberg, John W. North High School graduate, public relations director at Disneyland Resort and founder of the Association for Women in Sports Media; and Jim Clover, sports medicine expert at the Riverside Medical Clinic.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the clinic will run from 8 a.m. to noon. Registration is available at the Eventbrite registration page. Tickets are $20.
