Community | 12 Days of Giving - Day Four
By: Ashley Solis
Many political, social and spiritual groups would encourage being altruistic and giving back to your community year-round. However, something is in the air during the holiday season that really brings out the spirit of giving in all of us. For 12 days throughout December, we want to inspire you to give back to those who are in need in our local neighborhoods. Our "12 Days of Giving" feature will share the impact and needs of twelve different Inland Empire charities. Our hope is that each feature will inform you and encourage you to donate, volunteer or give back in some way. Please consider giving the gift of kindness to a stranger this season, because it may be the only one they receive.
Day Four — House of Ruth in Pomona
One in four women and one in 12 men will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. House of Ruth has been providing life-saving services to victims of domestic violence for the past 36 years and their focus is to assist victims of domestic violence through an emergency shelter, 24-hour hotline, programs, opportunities and education. With the holidays quickly approaching, many women and their children are forced to leave their homes and focus on one thing—safety. With safety being the family’s main goal, it leaves little or no time to prepare for the holiday season.
Fortunately, every year House of Ruth hosts a Holiday Store that provides new toys and gifts to women and their children affected by domestic violence. Mothers are able to shop for their children, and children are able to pick the perfect holiday surprise for their mother. Last year 452 women and children were able to have a wonderful holiday thanks to generous donations of toys, food, gifts and dollars.
Since all of the gifts come from generous donations from the community, here’s how you can help; all donations should be new, unwrapped items and toys must be non-violent. Also, cash and gift card donations are always welcome. For gift ideas please refer to wishlists, and keep in mind that the survivors range from infants to seniors. Remember that sharing is caring, and if you can’t personally give back, share it with someone who can! #ieshineon #12daysofgiving
