Community | 12 Days of Giving - Day Three

By: Katrina Honer

Many political, social and spiritual groups encourage altruism and giving back to your community year-round. However, something is in the air during the holiday season that really brings out the spirit of giving in all of us. For 12 days throughout December, we want to inspire you to give back to those who are in need in our local neighborhoods. Our "12 Days of Giving" feature will share the impact and needs of 12 different Inland Empire charities. Our hope is that each feature will inform you and encourage you to donate, volunteer or give back in some way. Please consider giving the gift of kindness to a stranger this season, because it may be the only one they receive.

Day Three – LifeStream: Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties

LifeStream, formerly known as the Blood Bank of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, is a blood dedicated to helping saves lives by connecting donors and patients through “the gift of blood.” With five donor centers located in San Bernardino, Riverside, Ontario, Victorville and La Quinta, LifeStream services over 80 medical facilities in Southern California.

Blood is constantly needed to meet the demand of “surgery and trauma patients, transplant receipts, premature infants and cancer patients.” This need only increased following the tragic shooting that just occurred in the city of San Bernardino. With the help of eight mobile units, LifeStream is able to host mobile blood drives at a variety of locations throughout Southern California including college campuses, high schools, business centers, churches and clinics.

This holiday season, LifeStream needs your help in restoring their shelves with O-negative blood due to a current shortage as of November 19th 2015. O-negative blood is unique as it can be given to a patient of any blood type and is usually the go-to blood for ER doctors and other health related emergencies. While those with O-negative blood can donate to all blood types, O-negative individuals may only receive O-negative blood. Thus, a shortage of O-negative blood can affect many.

For those who might be afraid of needles, LifeStream asks for a minimum monetary donation of $10 which would help purchase boxes of single-use latex and non-latex gloves as part of their Give BIG San Bernardino County holiday fundraiser. Learn more about the cause, what each donation level can provide for the community, and make a donation today on their fundraiser page.

If you are interested in donating blood, plasma, or bone marrow, you can do so by visiting or calling one of the donor center locations listed here to schedule an appointment or by searching for the closest center or event by the center name, zip code, city or county on their website.

Remember that sharing is caring, and if you can’t personally give back, share it with someone who can! #ieshineon #12daysofgiving
