Enter the world of Pandora at Toruk: The First Flight
By Megan McClain
"Toruk: The First Flight" by Cirque du Soleil is an immersion into the world of Pandora and the Na’vi people’s cultures, folklore and history from James Cameron's film "Avatar. For fans of the film that inspired this show, this is an amazing experience not to be missed.
Two young Na’vi are sent on a quest to save their sacred tree, almost as tall as the arena itself, from a volcanic eruption. Rotating scenery, lighting and pop-up flora filled the arena as the pair traveled to visit other clans, picking up sacred totems for their journey and fellow questors to aid them on their journey.
The sets echoed the bioluminescent world of Pandora, bringing to life an ancient folkloric quest through a storyteller, accented with guidance from shamans, leaders and sacred ceremonies. Incorporating pieces such as a backbone for a nighttime balancing sequence, silks and ropes for vines and the artistry and skill of a Cirque do Soleil production leaves the arena crowd breathless.
The show is amazing from any angle of the arena, as actors walk stairs, perform stunts around the perimeter and lights immerse the audience into the bioluminescent world. Puppetry is used to bring alive the animals or Pandora.
There is a correlating app for the show which, if downloaded before the show, will allow audience members to be part of the show, filling the arena with glowing stars and other enhancements. It also provides extra immersion during the long intermission, which leaves plenty of time to grab a snack and check out the souvenirs, including glowing flowers, tee shirts, DVD and program.
