There’s a whole new way to enjoy the snow, thanks to El Nino’s blessing covering the mountains.
The inaugural Big Bear Winter Festival is Saturday, February 27th and 28th at Snow Summit Resort. The festival was organized by Big Bear Cycling and Open Shoe Big Bear to take advantage of the recent snowfall.
Saturday will feature fat bike rides along US Forest Service roads that are 6, 10, 14 and 18 miles long. The snowshoe races will be on single track trails that are 5K, 10K and 22K long. At the end of the courses, there is a no-host bar and barbeque for participants and spectators, as well as vendors and live entertainment.
Sunday there will be the same festival atmosphere along with a fat bike criterium and demo courses for each sport.
Same-day registration for the snowshoe races is at 7a.m. The 22K snowshoe race starts at 8a.m., the 10K races starts at 8:15a.m. and the 5K race at 8:30a.m. An awards ceremony immediately follows. Online registration is $40 for the 5K, $50 for the 10K and $60 for the 22K.
Registration for fat bike rides is from 10a.m. to 12:30p.m on Saturday, February 27. This ride starts at 1 p.m. Participants have a choice of 6, 10, 14 and 18 mile rides, rates are $50 each ride. A discounted rate of $80 is available for participants who sign up for both a snowshoe race and fat bike ride.
