Megan's Wings Annual Run
Run for A Cure with Megan’s Wings
By Manuel Cortez
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people in the United States are diagnosed with cancer, and of those, hundreds of thousands are children. When children are diagnosed, the entire family is impacted. The number of cancer survivors among children has significantly increased since 1985, which is more than any other group, through awareness, diligence and continuous research.
One organization spreading awareness and inspiring hope is Megan’s Wings. Co-founded by Kim Savage, Megan’s Wings is a non-profit organization that not only spreads awareness about the disease, but also provides assistance and relief to families trying to persevere through such troubling circumstances.
Savage started the organization two years after her 9-year-old daughter Megan passed away because of leukemia. Since 2005, Megan’s Wings has helped bring aid relief to families affected by various types of cancer.
On Saturday Sept. 24, Megan’s Wings will present its 12th annual Memorial Run/Walk For A Cure in McCarthy Park in Upland. Registration for participation starts at $20 for children 12 and under and $35 for teens and adults. The 1k Kids Run will start at 8 a.m., and the 5k run will start at 8:30 a.m. McCarthy Park is located at North San Antonio Avenue and 20th Street in Upland.
