Natural Remedies for Flu Season

The weather is changing and the routines of the fall season are underway. Your children are excited to be back with their friends and for a chance to make new friendships. Schoolyard play, sleepovers and team sports keep our weeks full and lively.

As the seasons change, so do the needs of our immune system. The adjustments our bodies make to be fit for fall and winter are important. Plants can help give our bodies a protective boost against germs, and if a little “flu season” cold or allergies perk up, can help calm the coughing and sneezing. 

Knowing what to give your children during this season to help with these symptoms can be confusing.  There is a list that released mentioning the nine medicines not to give kids.

So, what can you use?  Plant essential oils can help guard against germs that may pass from one kiddo to the next, or may be waiting to be picked up at the monkey bars or shopping cart, gives mommas (and dads, too) the chance to be a step ahead of cold and flu season. Clove, cinnamon, lemon and orange are all great plants to aid in immune health and protection. Clove has antiviral properties, cinnamon stimulates the immune system, lemon is antibacterial and orange decreases inflammation for risk of disease.

If a cough and sniffle occur, the plants recommended are rosemary, basil, melaleuca and peppermint.  Rosemary helps cold and congestion, basil assists with respiratory health, melaleuca relieves sinusitis and peppermint aids in respiratory and asthmatic conditions. If you are a breastfeeding momma, peppermint can decrease milk volume. Please note that if you have a child under 1 year old, eucalyptus may be a irritant to the respiratory system.  Application of eucalyptus and these other plants mentioned needs to be properly diluted to avoid a possible skin rash or other reactions.

Essential oils are the essence or fragrance part of a plant, or even the whole plant, that can be used for medicinal purposes. Essential oils are also very concentrated and you should only invest in those that are 100 percent pure, organic and go through cold pressed distillation.
