Upland Community Heroes
Upland to honor police and fire departments as this year’s community heroes
Upland Day will be celebrated at the Los Angeles County Fair on Thursday, Sept. 22, and this year the Upland Community Committee has selected the Upland Police and Fire Departments as the city’s 2016 Community Heroes. They will be honored during a ceremony and parade on Upland Day. The city’s police and fire personnel and their families are invited to attend the event.
The Upland Community Committee, comprised of local residents and business professionals, overwhelmingly expressed its desire to salute “Upland’s finest” for their dedicated and unselfish service, faithfulness and enthusiasm demonstrated toward the country and the community. This is the first time Upland has recognized entire agencies rather than individuals as the city’s community heroes. Both Police Chief Brian Johnson and Fire Chief Paul Segalla will speak on behalf of their respective departments, and the police officer and firefighter of the year also will be recognized.
Upland residents will receive coupons good for $5 admission on Sept. 22 enclosed in their August utility bills. The $5 admission coupons will also be distributed to students in the Upland Unified School District, and they may picked up available at Upland City Hall, Upland Chamber of Commerce and at businesses and organizations throughout the city.
Proceeds from the discount coupons will be used to fund buses for Upland school participation in the Fair Kids Field Trip Program. Donations also support the Fair’s “Big Yellow Bus” program to transport students to an educational tour of the Fair’s numerous exhibits, which are aligned with California school curriculum. School field trips are free and not limited only to Upland Day.
Community groups such as Boy and Girl Scouts, marching bands, youth sports participants, church youth groups, cheer squads and others are also welcomed and encouraged to be part of the Upland Day parade, which will step off at 5 p.m. on the fairgrounds on Sept. 22.
