February is Heart Month

Heart Month is so important for us women, not because it is nice to be loved and gifted on Valentine's Day, but to be aware of the signs of the #1 killer of women today...Heart Disease. What is astounding is the age range that this disease onsets. As early as in their 20s, women are being diagnosed with and/or have had symptoms or even an episode such as a heart attack or stroke.
Do you know the signs and symptoms? Please be mindful of these:
- Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain.
- Discomfort in other areas of the upper body. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
- Shortness of breath. This may occur with or without chest discomfort.
- Other signs. These may include breaking out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness.

We women are creatures of the Heart! It is how we make decisions, what we wear bravely on our sleeves, and what leads our heads and bodies to help us rise above the toughest challenges we sometimes face on a daily basis. That is why making our heart health a top priority is one of the best decisions to can make at the start of a New Year, and continue these lifestyle practices for many years to come.
My great grandmother lost her life young due to a heart condition. Even three generations later our family still feels the impact of that loss.
